You know that tag line for snickers? Snickers satisfies you. Well...smoothies satisfy ME. Because I load them with TONS of nutrients that give me energy and staying power. If you hate the idea of drinking something that is super healthy and would rather eat an artificially flavored , corn-syrup filled piece of candy that contains partially hydrogenated crap (aka Snickers bar), than don’t bother reading the rest of this post.
Here is why I drink smoothies...
Let me be brutally honest. I started blending up smoothies because I really don’t like dark green leafy vegetables. Ask my husband…he has witnessed me gagging on spinach salad at the table. If I ever do a FB live while eating greens, it won’t be a pretty sight.
But I’m a nutritionist and I’m SUPPOSED to like dark green leafy vegetables, right? Wrong. I’m challenged with eating vegetables just like many people are.
Sooo the idea of being able to blend up spinach or kale into a smoothie that has fruit and other ingredients in it that actually ERASE the bitterness of the greens…well that’s just spectacular.
The first time I blended up a smoothie, it was bright green and I hesitated before sipping it. Just as I was about to take a sip, my teenage son (who is known for his cynical one-liners) remarked that it looked like liquid grass clippings.
But after my first sip I was hooked! All I tasted was the sweetness of the pineapple, mango, and banana. It was like a tropical drink minus the alcohol.
I quickly became obsessed (which is easy for a person with OCD to do), and I started experimenting with all sorts of flavor combos, and whenever I found a smoothie recipe I liked, I would type it up and print it out and put it in my smoothie binder. Yes I said “smoothie binder”. It’s a thing. And I keep it in my kitchen cabinet.

One summer I got really ambitious and I bought a TON of fresh organic fruits and super greens and packaged them up to keep in the freezer so I could make my smoothies. But that got annoying. So now what I do is buy pre-packaged frozen bags of fruit (organic when I can), so I always have ingredients on hand.
Here’s my strategy for creating the perfect smoothie:
When do I drink smoothies?
There are endless variations so they never get boring. Variety IS the spice of life, yes?
