What’s on your agenda for this week? Planning on grilling?
Here are some simple strategies to keep in mind for eating well at your summer BBQs, along with a 20 minute workout you can do while the grill is warming up.
Tip 1: Avoid processed deli meats or hot dogs which are full of harmful cancer-causing nitrates and other bad stuff. Choose grass-fed steaks or burger meat.
Tip 2: Ditch the white bread buns. Choose whole-grain buns for that grass-fed burger OR for an even better LOW-CARB option, go bun-less and wrap that burger in romaine lettuce leaves. You can also be rebellious and just eat the burger naked…let me rephrase that…not without YOUR clothes on, but rather the burger is naked…nothing wrapped around it at all. Eat it with a knife and fork or just with your hands. It’s liberating.
Tip 3: Don’t forget the veggies! Do up some veggie kabobs on the grill with chunks of bell peppers, onions, whole mushrooms, and zucchini wedges. This also works well with shellfish…add some shrimp or scallops to the skewers.
Tip 4: There is ALWAYS room for dessert, right? For someone with a sweet tooth like me, there definitely is. Instead of ice-cream or other sugary treats like cookies, slice up a watermelon. Watermelon is nutrient-dense and also very hydrating. Fresh berries are also a good dessert option.
Tip 5: Work some activity into your day to rev your metabolism and keep your energy levels up. Go for a run or a swim or do some bodyweight conditioning. Here is a quick 30-minute workout you can do while the grill is heating up…
This workout has 5 rounds (with 1 minute rest between each round). If you need more rest than 1 minute, take it. Go at your own pace and modify as needed.
Do each exercise (5 total) for as many reps as you can (I aim for 15-20 reps). After completing all 5 exercises, rest for a minute (or longer if you need to), and then repeat the process for 4 more rounds.
